Lionel Messi is the Key player for Argentina team:

Diego Maradona will aim to find the ideal blend right in time for Argentina's World Cup opener against Nigeria with so many attacking options. Even though it was very difficult for qualifying for the FIFA World cup, because they won only eight out of 18 matches and finally found the perfect attacking partner for Messi in Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín. But with the deep pool of talent in Argentina's attack, Higuaín has to be on top of his game to get the starting nod. He's competing in a depth chart that includes big names such as Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tévez and Diego Milito, just to name a few.

Argentina is deep and talented at every position. Its greatest strength is easily its attack, where FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi is the clear standout. Messi was in extraordinary form in leading Barcelona to a record-breaking six titles in 2009, which included the UEFA Champions League, the Club World Cup and Spain's La Liga.

However, Messi's form with the national team has been a different story. The 22-year-old hasn't been a fraction of the player he is with Barcelona and has been heavily criticized. La Pulga ("the flea") is more than aware that he has underachieved for Argentina, but his global reputation means he will have no choice but to get it right at the World Cup.

Liverpool star Javier Mascherano will wear the captain's armband in South Africa, but 34-year-old playmaker Juan Sebastián Verón will coach the side on the field. After missing out on the '06 World Cup -- then coach José Pekerman preferred Juan Román Riquelme to fill the playmaker role -- "La Brujita" will take part in his third World Cup and, in the absence of Riquelme (who retired from the national team after a dispute with Maradona), will be expected to be Argentina's main link between midfield and attack. Like a fine wine, Verón seems to get better with age, and the two-time South American Footballer of the Year will be responsible for orchestrating Argentina's best attacking moves in South Africa. His influence likely will determine the impact made by Messi.

World Cup in Mexico
1986

Nothing is best for Doego Maradona. After the frustration of 1982, El Diego dominated this tournament, winning the Golden Ball as best player and captaining Argentina to a second World Cup title. Mardona played every minute of every match, scoring five, assisting five and making himself inarguably the greatest player in the world. Not too shabby for the boy from Villa Fiorito.

Argentina topped Group A by beating South Korea 3-1, drawing 1-1 with Italy and beating Bulgaria 2-0. In the knockout round of 16 they beat Uruguay 1-0 and then faced old rivals England in the quarter-final. The game is famous for two very Maradona incidents.

First the infamous “Hand of God” goal

where little Diego beat Peter Shilton to a high ball by using his hand, later claiming “The goal was scored a little bit by the hand of God, a little by the head of Maradona.”

Yes, it was cheating. But even as an England fan, I have to admire the skill with which he pulled this off. There’s even a little nod of the head there to disguise it.

Maradona more than made up for that little bit of cheating by scoring arguably the greatest goal in World Cup history later in the same game:

El Diego picked the ball up in his own half, and dribbled past at least half the England team before sidestepping Peter Shilton and rolling home. Can’t argue with that.

Maradona scored another two as Argentina beat Belgium 2-0 in the semi-final, including this beauty:

Maradona didn’t score in the final, but was influential as Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 with goals from José Luis Brown, Jorge Valdano and Jorge Burruchaga:

FIFA said they have been sold 100,000 World Cup tickets in less than two days.

Information from the FIFA said they have been sold 100,000 World Cup tickets in less than two days.
FIFA said Saturday that 14 matches were sold out, including the final, semifinals and South Africa's group games.

An extra 90,000 tickets, mainly returns from FIFA's sponsors, were added to the pool on Friday leaving organizers with 160,000 to sell just two weeks ahead of the June 11 kickoff.

The release was hampered Friday by computer glitches. But fans have flocked to the centers for seats to big games like the July 11 final, which were previously unavailable.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said the tournament was approaching the 97-percent sales mark of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Valcke said FIFA was "very happy" with the response of the fans, some of which were in line for two days and had to wait an additional two hours after the ticketing system crashed.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter also addressed reporters for the first time since arriving in South Africa on Thursday.

Blatter visited the Peter Mokaba Stadium in the northern city of Polokwane on Saturday, one of three World Cup stadiums he had not seen since they were completed.

As FIFA officially took control of the newly built venue for the World Cup, Blatter stressed that world soccer ruling body had faith in South Africa's preparations.

"All the world is focused on South Africa," Blatter said, "and all the world will look at what happened in the African continent when, finally, there was an organization called FIFA that said 'we trust Africa. We trust South Africa with such a big competition.'"

Blatter also visited the colorful Mbombela Stadium, with its black and white seats, in Nelspruit. He will travel to the 50,000-seat Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the south coast city of Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Arsenal third place in the Premier League

English Premier League:
securely third with easy victory Eurosport and Arsenal secured third place in the Premier League with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal themselves might cast an envious glance Fulham's way after their season fell apart in recent weeks as they exited the Champions League and blew their title chances, making it five seasons without a trophy.

But Arsene Wenger's men were not to be denied a fourth goal and it came when substitute Vela latched on to a pass by Nasri and finished with a classy effort.
